Das 22.5 km lange U Bahn-Netz Pyongyangs besteht aus der Nord-Süd-Linie, "Chollima" genannt, und der Ost-West-Linie "Hyoksin", was soviel bedeutet wie "Erneuerung". Die Bauarbeiten begannen im Jahre 1968, zunächst unterstützt von sowjetischen Spezialisten. Am 5. September 1973 wurde, im Anschluss an eine Eröffnungszeremonie unter Anwesenheit von Präsident Kim Il Sung, der erste Abschnitt der Chollima-Linie für den öffentlichen Verkehr frei gegeben.

The underground railway of Pyongyang contains of two lines of together 22,5 km length. The line in north-south direction is called "Chollima", the east-west line "Hyoksin". The construction started with the help of Russian engineers in 1968. Five years later, on September 5th, 1973, the president Kim Il Sung inaugurated the first section of the Chollima line.
